I pānuitia e ahau tētehi tuhinga i tuhia inā noa nei e taku hoa e Michael Taiapa. I ngā marama katoa o te tau e whakairia ake ana e ia he “kupu whai whakaaro” e takea mai ana i Te Pukapuka a Moromona(pāwhiritia a konei ki te peka atu ki tana paetuhi, ki a e tipu e reo). E hāngai ana ngaua whiti katoa ki te tūranga mahurangi o te reo ki ngā oranga o tēnā o tēnā. Ko te whiti tāna i tīpako mō te marama o Hakihea ko tēnei;

I read recently an article written by my friend Michael Taiapa. Every month he posts ‘words of wisdom’ sourced from the Book of Mormon (click here to go to his blog, e tipu e reo). All those verses relate to the important place language has in all of our lives. The verse he selected for the month of December was this one;

Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians. – 1 Nephi 1:2

At the beginning of the Book of Mormon Nephi explains he knows the language of his father, that is, the Hebrew language and that he also knows how to write using the Egyptian alphabet. Because of his ability to speak and write in the language of his father, he was able to ably express his thoughts and expertly set out his many views about the doctrines and principles of the gospel. If he was not proficient in his language, or had he written in another language, I am of the opinion that he would not have been able to write an eloquent book such as this one.

Michael and I are of the belief that through a child’s ability to understand their native tongue that the their ability to learn and to understand their world and their connections to the world. As because the native language becomes the basis where the manner in which a child relates to the world is established, and are able to comprehend the world. It is very difficult for a child to learn if they are learning through a foreign language and the the development of their native language or their second language is not supported at the school that is attended by them. Without continued support and development in their native tongue it is unlikely that they will gain a good grasp of understanding, of enlightenment or comprehension of their world in their second language.

Heoti anō e hoa mā, he aha ngētehi take ā-motu, kaupapa ā-motu rānei e whaitikanga nui ana ki a koutou i tēnei wā?

Today I listened to Willie Jackson, to his show “Pākīwaha”. QC Peter Williams was interviewed by Willie Jackson about his thoughts on the increase of Māori crime. Willie referred to the rape that happened last week committed against a girl 5 years old, comitted by a Māori youth and they began to talk about the narrow view of the majority against those who commit crime. According to Peter Williams, the country (New Zealand) has a tendency to brutalize people who commit crime, he says that the country needs to look for effective solutions to assit rehabilitate these type of people (more than just corporal punishment and killing people). Peter spoke about the large number of the public who strongly have condemned the youth also calling for the ability of the court to sentence people to death to be restored and his opposition to that call.

The interesting part for me was when Willie asked Peter “Would you be just as able to forgive if it was your own daughter or grandchild who was raped?”. He dodged Willie’s question and he continued to talk about all the ills affecting New Zealand society (such as poverty, child starvation etc etc). Despite his dodging of the question he still mentioned issues that beset New Zealand currently. But, he still said “it is inappropriate for victims of crime to act as judges as well” hence, in his view, Willie’s question was inappropriate. A judge needs to be able to judge in objectivity.

Anyway my friends, what are some national issues or national or national points of discussion that are important to you today? Also, if your own child was raped, would you be able to forgive the wrong of the person who committed the act?

One of the reasons why this blog was established was to support the revitalization of the Māori language. Following from that I thought that it would be best to italicize words for people who are learning or who have already mastered the language to help them learn modern words or phrases that are rarely heard these days. Italicized words indicate that an English translation follows after the text.

My hope is that through explaining these types of words and types of phrases that the development of the modern language will blossom like a flower so that youth and children will be able to speak Māori in years to come! Tīmoti Karetu, Māori language expert, strongly believes that a child needs to be able to express their world through their language and if they are unable to do so then they will abandon their language so they can find a new one that will be able to express their deepest of thoughts.

Ko Hanuere te marama tuatahi o te tau Pākehā hou. E ai tā ngā kōrero ā ngētehi mātanga Hītori, ka ahu mai te ingoa ‘Hanuere’, arā, ko January, i te atua Rōmā tawhito, i a Janus. E kīia ana, ko Janus te atua o ngā tīmataranga hou, o ngā whatitoka anō hoki. Nā taua ritenga i takengia ai te whakaaro kia whakaritea a Hanuere hei marama tuatahi o ia tau o ia tau mai rānō.

Heoti anō, anei he whakaaro hei āwhina i a tātou katoa nō tātou e whakarite tikanga ana mō te tau e takoto ake nei.

Whakaritea he whāinga e taea ana te whakatutuki. He koretake noa iho te whakarite whāinga mēnā e kore e taea e koe te whakatutuki. Hei tauira, mēnā ko tōu whāinga kia tū koe hei kaiako reo Hainamana, mēnā kāore koe e mōhio ana ki te kōrero Haimana, e kore e taea e koe tōu whāinga te whakatutuki i te tau kotahi. Heoti, me tauwehewehe e koe tōu whāinga kia maha ngā whāinga rīriki e taea ai e koe te whakatutuki. Nō reira, e hoki ake ana ki taku tauira, ka taea taua whāinga te tauwehewehe kia rua ngā whāinga. Me matua ako koe ki te kōrero Hainamana i te tuatahi, mā reira e taea ai e koe te tahuri ki te ako me pēwhea koe e whakaako ai i te reo Hainamana.

Kia manawanui – kīhai a Rōmā i whakatū i te rā kotahi. Nā reira, kaua e tuku ake i tōu whāinga mēnā e kore e taea e koe tōu whāinga te whakatutuki i te wā poto. Me whai tonu e koe tōu whāinga kia tutuki rānō i a koe.

January is the first month of European new year. According to what some history experts have to say the name January is derived from the ancient Roman god Janus. It is said that Janus is the god of new beginnings, and of door ways as well. It is from that symbolism that the idea came about for January to be made the first month of year many years ago. It is at this time of year, all of us starts to make new goals and to urge ourselves – I can do better!

Tomorrow Sāmoa will be the first country to greet the new European year. By way of law they have decided to move the international date line from the west of their country to the east. They are doing this because it will become easier for them to trade with New Zealand and Australia as when New Zealand and Australia used to return to trading on Mondays it was still Sunday in Sāmoa. When New Zealand and Australia would finish trading for the week, Sāmoa still had a day left of trading. By doing this they will be able to trade on the same day as New Zealand and Australia. It is thought that the economy of Sāmoa will grow as a result.

Anyway, here are some thoughts to help all us as we set new plans/goals for the year ahead.

Set goals that can be achieved. It is pointless to set goals if you are unable to achieve them. For example, if it is your goal to become a Māori language teacher, if you do not know how to speak Māori, you won’t be able to accomplish your goal within the year. And so, you would need to split your goal into many small goals you will be able to achieve. Therefore, going back to my example, that goal can be split into two. You should first learn how to speak Māori and by doing so you will then be able to start to learn how you can teach the Māori language.

Be patient – Rome was not built in a day. So, don’t give up your goal if you can’t achieve it in a short space of time. You should pursue your goal until you’ve achieved it. You’ll be happier for it, I promise.

Kia manawanui – kīhai a Rōmā i whakatū i te rā kotahi. Nā reira, kaua e tuku ake i tōu whāinga mēnā e kore e taea e koe tōu whāinga te whakatutuki i te wā poto. Me whai tonu e koe tōu whāinga kia tutuki rānō i a koe.

If you want to give up a bad habit, such as “smoking”, don’t be shy to turn to your friends/family to get assistance from them if you think you’re going to revert back to your old habits. They will help you in your time of need.

By many small goals, you’ll reach your major goals. Indeed, pursue the distant horizon until it is close. Pursue the close horizon until you have achieved it!

Meri Kirihimete koutou katoa e whai mai ana i taku paetuhi nei

He whakairinga poto noa iho tēnei. E mōhio ana rānei koutou ko te taonga o te whakaoranga o ngā tāngata i whakatakotoria e Ihu hei koha mā te katoa te take tūturu e whakanuia ana te Kirihimete e ngā kaiaru o te whakapono Karaitiana? E ai tā Hoani “I te aonga ake ka kite ia [arā, a Hoani] i a Ihu e haere ana mai ki a ia, ka mea, Nā, te Reme a te Atua, hei waha atu i te hara o te ao!” – Hoani 1:29

Mō te roanga atu o ngā kōrero mō te oranga o Ihu Karaiti me tana whakatakanga, pānuitia ngā pukapuka tuatahi e whā o Te Kāwenata Hou.

Heoti anō rā! Noho ora mai, nē?

Merry Christmas to all of you who are following my blog.
This is just a short post. Did you know that the reason why adherents of Christianity celebrate Christmas is the gift of salvation to all of mankind given by Jesus as an offering. According to John “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away sin of the World!” – John 1:29

For further information about the life of Jesus Christ and his mission, read the first four books of the New Testament.

That’s all for now! Please keep safe, ok?
